Safety Alert
Posted on Jan 18th, 2013

For your information and awareness, the Northville Police Department issued the following information today regarding two assaults:
Incident # 13-161
At approximately 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 16, a 69 year old woman had just returned from the Northville Community Center to her home on Lake St. She had put her car in her garage and was walking down her driveway when an African American male described as being in his thirties with a medium build wearing a dark ¾ length cloth coat and carrying a burgundy portfolio approached her and asked if she would take part in a survey. The victim questioned the type of survey and noticed that the person did not have any type of identification such as a lanyard with an identification card or badge, so she asked to see some I.D.  This is the last that she remembered. When she awoke she managed to get into her home and call a friend who took her to the hospital.  The victim suffered a fractured jaw and a severe head injury. She has been admitted to the hospital and is listed in stable condition.

The victim’s purse was taken containing her cell phone, credit cards and identification. The cell phone has been recovered in Farmington Hills. The vehicle used by the culprit is described as a light colored, possible tan, sedan.
Officers are working with neighboring jurisdictions, which may have had similar incidents. The Farmington Hills Police received a similar incident involving a woman being attacked after arriving home in her vehicle just before 11:00 p.m. yesterday.
The Northville Police Department requests that anyone with additional information call 248-349-9400.
Northville Public Schools will maintain our daily security protocols with a heightened level of alert.  All staff members, playground supervisors, etc. are being made aware of this information.

Please review and reinforce safety procedures with your children. Students who walk home from school should use the buddy system and walk with other students.  Reinforce the need to run away, keep shouting for help, and go to the nearest safe spot if ever approached by a stranger. Once in a safe spot, students should immediately tell an adult what happened. Parents and community members are asked to report any suspicious incidents to the police department, as well as notifying the school principal.

We remain hopeful that the individual responsible for these acts will be apprehended quickly, and keep the victims and families impacted by these attacks in our thoughts and wishes for recovery.
